    Nursery Rhymes

Post by Fizzie on Mon Jun 09, 2008 7:38 pm

Am I the only one who notices how horrible alot of nursery ryhmes are?

    For example:

Jack and Jill went up the hill to fetch a pail of water,
Jack fell down and broke his crown,
    And Jill came tumbling after.

Why would we want our children to visualize (because they do when they're old enough to understand the words you're saying/singing to them) someone hurting themselves!?

    And:

Rock a bye baby on the tree top,
When the wind blows the cradle will rock,
When the bough breaks the cradle will fall,
And down will come baby, cradle and all.

Nice way to scare your child, no?

    And then there's this one:

    Piggy on the railway,
    Picking up stones,
    Down came an engine,
    and broke piggy’s bones.
    "Aah" said the piggy,
    "That’s not fair",
    "Oh" said the engine driver,
    "I don’t care".

    That's horrible!!

You would be surprised of the origins and meanings of some of the old nursery rhymes and fairy tales.
