The year is 2078, and we still haven’t learnt. It was once said that wars do not make one great, did we listen? Did we hell. As a race, we humans just kept making bigger and better weapons. About 30 years ago, a scientist created a means of powering huge tanks up to 20 stories high. A small nuclear power station, hidden deep within its core, powers each tank. We have used the VT (Vertical Tanks) in many wars since they were first built.

10 years ago, there was a worldwide seize-fire. Every nation’s military leaders ordered that all fighting was to stop. They thought it was best to focus their efforts on bettering the human race as a whole. The world leaders decided to band together as one race. Discrimination was brought to a near stop, as a result. At last we seemed to have done something right. However, there was a little unrest, as many seemed not to like the idea of a united world.

8 years ago, the plans for designing and building VTs was illegally released to the public. After claims that hobbyists used them, they were deemed legal provided a VT hobby licence was shown.

6 years ago, plans for mock wars were started, giving people an outlet to vent their frustration. This seemed to work for a long period. The world lived in silence, as far as wars go, ever since. Factions of hobbyists and military groups played in the mock wars. It became very popular in just a short while.

Recently, a faction, known as ‘The Wolf-pack’ has announced their intentions of world domination. It is suspected that The Wolf-pack are those that did not revel in the idea of a united world. We knew it would only be a matter of time before this was a genuine case. Power corrupts people almost as much as money corrupts people. The Wolf-pack seems to have both. They have what could possibly be the most advanced VTs we’ve ever seen, ranging from small and nimble to large and powerful.

Various factions of the Terran Defence Force (TDF) have attempted sorties against The Wolf-pack, but have sustained heavy casualties. The TDF have asked for members from each faction to come forward. All those who step forward have been promised a stipend of 500,000 credits, with a further 1,000,000 upon victory over The Wolf-pack.

The city of Zanzibar, home of The Redeemers, is a large industrialised city, largely believed to be one of the biggest producers of VT, Vertical Tank, parts. On the outskirts of this city lies a solitary house, neighboured only by a single warehouse. The warehouse was larger than the house, much larger.

The warehouse housed many VT parts, some hung from the walls, some strewn across the floor while more hung from a series of pullies, suspended from the high vaulted ceiling. A small VT that resembled a power suit that was about 10 sizes too big stood idle near a gargantuan spider-like mech. The spider-like mech, so called because it was more horizontal than vertical, was the pride and joy of young Joey Strider. The sound of Zanzibar Radio drifted through the air, it’s source sat atop of the mech that Joey had lovingly named ‘Spider’.

On top of Spider, Joey sat listening to the radio as he was welding a loose plate back into place. He held a welding mask over his face to protect his eyes. He stopped for a few moments as he set the mask aside and turned the blowtorch down to a small flame. He reached round behind him and fumbled around. He grabbed a small cardboard box and slapped the bottom on his leg. A cigarette slid out and he took it in his mouth. He used the torch to light the cigarette as he turned his face away from the flame. With his fag lit, he turned the torch back up and replaced his mask to continue welding the plate.

He had barely started to finish the plate when he heard a buzz. He stopped welding and turned the radio down to make sure of what he heard. The buzz sounded again, making him stop what he was doing, switching off the torch and grabbing his cigarettes in case he was gone a while. He ran towards the edge of his beloved Spider and jumped towards the front legs, which Joey always set up like steps before locking them in position when working on top. As he made it to the floor, the buzz sounded again, this time several times in rapid succession.
“Yes?” Joey said as he reached the intercom, that his father had set up several years ago, and pushed the PTT button.
“Joey? Can you come to the house, please?” Said a faceless female voice from inside the house.
“Ok, mum, I won’t be long.” Said Joey to his mother.
