Its about practice, i have NO artistic flare but im getting better with practice
Examples
old sig
The render is p*ss poor, the gradient used isn't exciting and whatnot, the background is urgh, and the text is 'off'
latest sig
The background is a glashing red/black gradient, the renders are near perfect, the border has been tweaked with an outer glow, its been bevel and embosed, the text has been edited and carefully placed, the background image has had its opacity changed.
And a lot of other crap o.o

Hmm, I guess it really depends what kinda sig you want. I use PaintShopPro 7 for all my graphix.
I concider my sigs to be pretty simple and easy to make. I've seen some around the net that must've taken ages and a hell of alot of effort, but to me, they just look over-done.
I guess I know what I want and just go for that. Depending on what I'm doing, an avatar and signature set can take me anything from just one hour, right up to around ten hours to complete.
